A comprehensive study analyzing 16 years of road-count data from central South Africa has revealed a troubling trend for birds of prey. The extensive study, covering 400,000 kilometers, indicates steep declines in raptors and large birds across the region.
Out of 26 species examined, half have experienced significant population decreases. alarmingly, 42% of these species have seen their numbers drop by more than 50%. The findings suggest that migratory raptors and key resident species, such as secretarybirds, are among the most severely impacted by these declines.
