Polar Bears Seek Refuge in Abandoned Buildings Amidst Ice Loss

Polar bears have been photographed in an unusual habitat: the grassy grounds and abandoned buildings of a Soviet-era research station on Kolyuchin Island, located in the far-eastern Chukotka district of Russia. The research station itself has been empty since it was abandoned by humans in 1992.

Photographer Vadim Makhorov captured these striking images using a drone. The bears have reportedly made themselves at home within the structures of the former research facility. This relocation to land-based structures and grassy expanses suggests a significant adaptation to changing environmental conditions impacting their natural icy environment.

The presence of polar bears in such a location underscores the challenges these animals face as their sea ice habitat diminishes. The photos offer a visual testament to the adaptive behaviors polar bears may be exhibiting in response to these environmental shifts. The expedition that documented these bears operated from a vessel approximately one nautical mile away.
