Peatlands: Vital Ecosystems in Climate Change Battle Honored on World Peatland Day

World Peatland Day highlights the significant role of peatlands, a unique boggy wetland ecosystem, in the ongoing fight against climate change.

These vital ecosystems are distributed across diverse geographical regions, including the boreal forests of the Russian Arctic and the tropics of central Africa.

Normally, the decomposition of vegetation releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. However, in peatlands, organic matter submerged in water is prevented from fully decomposing. This process effectively traps and sequesters carbon, preserving it for extended periods, potentially thousands of years.

The continued preservation and understanding of peatlands are therefore essential for climate change mitigation efforts.
