The Gola Rainforest National Park in Sierra Leone is exhibiting a remarkable profusion of natural sound, observed by H.S. Sathya Chandra Sagar. Standing among the park’s towering trees, Sagar noted the distinct calls of numerous bird species, the vocalizations of primates, and the distant drumming sounds of chimpanzees.
These drumming chimpanzees were observed using their fists and sticks to strike tree roots. This complex behavior, occurring in a rainforest rich with wildlife, suggests a healthy ecosystem. The observation comes in the context of carbon financing efforts, hinting at a positive correlation between these financial mechanisms and the flourishing of biodiversity within the park.
