Brazil’s government has announced a substantial $75 million investment in the BR-319 highway, a development that has raised alarms among environmentalists. Concerns are mounting that this infrastructure project could accelerate deforestation within the Amazon rainforest.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has asserted that the BR-319 will be constructed as the most environmentally advanced road globally. This highway connects the states of Amazonas and Rondonia and has largely remained unpaved since its initial construction in 1976.
